Demonstrating EIB’s transparency, funding efficiency and responsible commitment in microfinance

Participation in the Smart Aid for Microfinance Index

The SmartAid Index for Microfinance was created by the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP), the multi-donor policy and research centre dedicated to advancing financial access for the world’s poor. The SmartAid Index measures the efficiency of institutions involved in designing and delivering microfinance projects

The EIB and EIF were both rated as having “good” systems in place on the SmartAid Index, in 2011 and 2013 respectively.

Participation in the annual CGAP Funder Survey

As a major funder of the microfinance sector, the EIB group yearly participates in the CGAP Funder survey of its microfinance portfolio. It provides useful benchmarks and trends as compared to the 20 largest microfinance funders. Click for the 2011 snapshot.

Endorsement of  the Client Protection Principles for microfinance

The EIB Group endorses the Client Protection Principles for microfinance (CPPs) in order to promote the implementation of socially responsible standards and practices throughout the microfinance industry. These principles are designed to protect MFI clients from potentially harmful financial products and ensure that they are treated fairly. They promote the adherence of MFIs to seven pro-consumer principles (Appropriate product design and delivery; prevention of over-indebtedness; transparent and responsible pricing, etc…)


Participation in the governance of support organisations

Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP)

The EIB is a member of the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP), which is a global partnership of 34 leading organizations that seek to advance financial inclusion. CGAP develops innovative solutions through practical research and active engagement with financial service providers, policy makers, and funders to enable approaches at scale. Housed at the World Bank, CGAP combines a pragmatic approach to responsible market development with an evidence-based advocacy platform to increase access to the financial services the poor need to improve their lives. The EIB participates in the executive committee of CGAP and represents the Development Finance Institutions constituency group.

European Microfinance Platform

The EIB is a founding member of the European Microfinance Platform and has participated in its governance since its inception.

Luxflag

In 2011, the EIB also became a charter member of Luxflag, the labelling agency for microfinance and environmental funds, and is represented on its Board of Directors

Luxembourg Inclusive Finance network (Infine)

Finally in 2014, EIB became member of the Luxembourg Inclusive Finance network (Infine). InFiNe.lu is the Luxembourg platform that brings together public, private and civil society actors involved in inclusive finance.


Supporting microfinance events

The EIB group regularly supports some of the major microfinance conferences, through sponsorship and high profile presentations, that are relevant to its activities and objectives of strengthening the sector.

European Microfinance Week and the European Microfinance Awards

The EIB Group supports of the European Microfinance Week, a yearly conference which brings together in Luxembourg a large number of microfinance stakeholders. The event is organised by the European Microfinance Platform (e-MFP), a network promoting the collaboration, coordination and innovation amongst European microfinance practitioners and stakeholders working in developing countries.

Since 2008, EIB has also hosted in the European Microfinance Award, a bi-annual award organised by the Government of Luxembourg in collaboration with e-MFP, and has been part of the selection jury.

African Microfinance week

In 2013, EIB sponsored the first African Microfinance week. This event is one of the major African microfinance events for and organized by microfinance professionals. It builds on the success of the African Microfinance Transparency Investor Fair  which has been supported by the Bank since 2010 and aimed at increasing overall transparency in the sector, and at facilitating contacts between microfinance investors and rated African MFIs.

Social Investor meeting of the Social Performance Task Force

In March 2015, the EIB hosted the Social Investors Working Group Meeting to discuss progress and challenges on the implementation of various initiatives in the finance sector

African Women Summit

In July 2014, the EIB participated in the 3rd African Women’s Economic Summit organised by the Pan-African organisation New Faces, New Voices in Lusaka, Zambia.

Europe

The European Investment Fund regularly participates to the major microfinance conferences in Europe such as the European Microfinance Network and the Microfinance Center Conference (MFC).
